Bibimbap at Hangukjip

Hanok Village

  • Daytime
  • Food

Since 1952. Brass bowl, raw beef, aged soybean soup. Where Jeonju bibimbap is actually from.

Tip Jeonju is the birthplace of bibimbap, and Hangukjip (한국집) has been serving it since 1952. The traditional version arrives in a heavy brass bowl (놋그릇) — never the sizzling stone bowl. Order the 'jeonju jeontong bibimbap' (전주전통비빔밥), mix gently with chopsticks not a spoon (locals say a spoon bruises the rice), and add the raw beef (yukhoe). The aged soybean paste soup that comes with it is the secret. Reserve weekends.

Kongnamul Gukbap

Hanok Village

  • Morning
  • Food

Bean-sprout soup with egg cracked into the bubbling pot. Jeonju's official hangover cure since 1979.

Tip Bean-sprout-and-rice soup is Jeonju's other claim to fame after bibimbap — and the city's official hangover cure. Two legends compete: Hyundai-ok (현대옥) is the chain that started here in 1979; Wangi Kongnamul Gukbap (왱이콩나물국밥) is the family stall locals queue for. Crack the egg into the bubbling broth, dunk the rice cake, dust with sesame and gim. Best eaten at 8AM after a makgeolli night.

Xtra Snack Run: PNB Choco-Pie

Old Downtown

  • Any
  • Food

The original Korean choco-pie since 1951, decades before the supermarket brands. Eat one walking.

Tip Pungnyeon Jegwa (풍년제과, PNB) has been making Jeonju's signature choco-pie since 1951 — decades before Orion or Lotte commercialized the format. The original is bigger, less sweet, more chocolatey. Buy one each, walk and eat. Make a snack walk: PNB choco-pie → Gilgeori-yaki (길거리야끼) octopus rolls in the hanok village → seasonal hotteok at Nambu Market → dried-persimmon skewers (곶감꼬치) in autumn. Don't sit; keep walking.

20–30 side dishes across an hour, then mains. Royal feasting, four-figure side dish counts. Book ahead.

Tip Jeonju hanjeongsik (전주한정식) is a multi-course royal-style feast — 20-30 side dishes arriving across an hour, then grilled fish, then galbi, then japchae, then bibimbap, then soup. You will be full at dish 8 and they are not stopping. Legendary spots: 가족회관 (Gajok Hoegwan, since 1979), 한국집 (Hangukjip's full set), 백번집. Book ahead for weekends. Bring an appetite and another ₩40,000 just in case.
