Tip Come after 7pm when Boon Tat Street out back closes to traffic and becomes Satay Street — a lane of open grills, plastic stools and beer towers under the skyscrapers. Order satay from one stall, then graze the Victorian cast-iron hall for Hokkien mee, BBQ stingray and sugarcane juice. It's open-air and smoky; sit on the street side for the atmosphere, the hall for the air-con-adjacent calm.

Tip Head upstairs to the hawker centre and go straight for Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice or the famous chwee kueh (steamed rice cakes with preserved radish) — both have morning queues for a reason.
