Korea's east-coast benchmark — 1.8km of pale sand, pine groves behind, the country's clearest beach water.

Tip Korea's east-coast benchmark beach — 1.8km of pale sand, pine groves at the back, clearest water on the peninsula. Less crowded than Haeundae, no high-rises. Walk the boardwalk south to Anmok Coffee Street (A) — about 35min on foot, prettier than the bus. Pine forest behind has wooden swings and family-friendly cycling paths. The sunset from the southern breakwater is the postcard.

Half the locals' answer to where in Gangneung for quiet. Pale-sand cove, working village, one perfect breakwater.

Tip Half the locals' answer to 'where on the east coast for a quiet date?' — a small cove with pale sand, a working fishing village behind it, and one perfect breakwater you can walk to the end of. Skip the larger Gyeongpo (G) crowds entirely. Bohemian Roasters (B) is 5min away — combine. A handful of small sashimi joints in the village do dinner from the morning catch.

The train station closest to the sea in the world. National sunrise pilgrimage on Jan 1; otherwise the platform is yours.

Tip Jeongdongjin Station is the train station closest to the sea in the world (a Guinness record), and the village shot to fame as the location of the 1995 Korean drama 'Hourglass' (모래시계). Sunrise here is a national pilgrimage on January 1, but every other morning the platform is yours. Watch the East Sea catch fire from the breakwater 200m from the station. The 'Hourglass Park' (모래시계공원) just south holds the world's largest hourglass — flipped every New Year's Eve.

Two red-and-white lighthouses on parallel breakwaters. Most photographed sunset in Gangwon-do. Walk to the gap between them.

Tip A small beach with two parallel breakwaters and a distinctive pair of red-and-white lighthouses — the most photographed sunset in Gangwon-do by amateur and professional shooters alike. The breakwater walk lets you stand between the lighthouses with the East Sea on both sides. Far quieter than Gyeongpo or Anmok. 10min north of Hyangho (H) and the BTS bus stop — easy to combine for a sunrise-sunset BTS day.

80km of two-lane road, the East Sea always on your left. Korea's PCH, half as crowded. Cinematic from Gangneung south.

Tip Highway 7 (7번 국도) hugs the coast from Gangneung to Samcheok — 80km of two-lane road, the East Sea always on your left, mountains right. Best at golden hour: leave Gangneung at 16:00, hit Jeongdongjin (S) at 16:30, Tongil Park (T) at 17:00, Haslla (V) just before close, sunset somewhere along the cliffs near Donghae. Rent a car at Gangneung Station. The cinematic drive nobody talks about. Comparable to the Pacific Coast Highway, half as crowded.
