Tip Gangneung Danoje is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — a 1,000-year-old shamanic festival held every 5th lunar month (late May/early June). Eight days: shaman rituals, traditional wrestling, swing competitions, mask dramas, food stalls along the Namdaecheon stream. Locals wash their hair in iris water (changpomul) for luck. The most authentic Korean folk festival you can witness, and arguably the country's oldest continuously held event. If your trip overlaps, drop everything.

Walk the boardwalk south to Anmok Coffee Street (A) — about 35min on foot, prettier than the bus. Pine forest behind has wooden swings and family-friendly cycling paths. The sunset from the southern breakwater is the postcard.

Tip The bus stop on the breakwater here is where BTS shot the 'Spring Day' (봄날) music video in 2017 — and pilgrims have come ever since. The original stop was a permanent installation kept for fans; sit on the bench in the same composition the members did. Best at sunrise — the East Sea glows pink and gold and you'll have it almost alone. Then walk south along the beach to Jumunjin Port for breakfast sashimi.

Joseon's greatest woman poet, dead at 27, her work nearly burned. Her birthplace hanok stands in a pine grove. Empty, free, moving.

Tip Heo Nanseolheon (1563–1589) was Korea's greatest Joseon-era female poet — child prodigy, married off at 14, dead at 27, her brother burned most of her poems on her instruction (those that survived made it to China and Japan, where she was famous before being known at home). Her birthplace hanok still stands here, in a pine grove. Free, quiet, gorgeous, almost no tourists. Bring her translated 'Selected Poems' and read on the courtyard. Among the most moving 30 minutes in Gangneung.

Tip Jeongdongjin Station is the train station closest to the sea in the world (a Guinness record), and the village shot to fame as the location of the 1995 Korean drama 'Hourglass' (모래시계). Sunrise here is a national pilgrimage on January 1, but every other morning the platform is yours. Watch the East Sea catch fire from the breakwater 200m from the station. The 'Hourglass Park' (모래시계공원) just south holds the world's largest hourglass — flipped every New Year's Eve.

Tip South of Anmok and far quieter — a ribbon of beach behind a dense old pine forest. The pines run for 1.5km between Gangneung Port and the beach itself, scented and shaded. Walk the path through the trees, then drop onto the sand on the seaward side. Couples come here when they want east-coast beach without the coffee-street crowds. The wooden swing under the largest pine is the spot.
