800 pastel facades between 5th and 23rd. Carlyle, Colony, Cardozo — the world's largest Art Deco district at golden hour.

Tip The largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world — 800+ pastel facades between 5th and 23rd, Ocean Drive to Lenox. Miami Design Preservation League's 90-minute guided walk leaves Wed/Fri/Sat 10:30 AM from 1001 Ocean Dr ($35). Or just drift: the Carlyle (1250 Ocean), the Colony (736 Ocean), the Cardozo (1300 Ocean) at golden hour, lit in neon by 8 PM. Best photographed before 10 AM when the light is flat and the colors pop. The Versace Mansion (1116 Ocean) is two blocks down — gawkable, not enterable.

The bay cruise is the date. 90 minutes past Star Island mansions and the downtown skyline rising out of Biscayne Bay.

Tip Open-air waterfront mall on Biscayne Bay — yes, it's touristy, but the Island Queen 90-minute bay cruise ($38, departs hourly 11 AM – 7 PM) is the legit way to see Star Island's mansions, the cruise port, and the downtown skyline from the water. Live Latin music on the bayfront stage most evenings. Free Metromover ride here from anywhere downtown. Bayfront Park next door for the Friendship Torch and the InterContinental's giant Henry Moore sculpture. Stop by, eat fast, board a boat.

A 1924 coral-quarry swimming hole. Venetian bridges, palm grottoes, springwater refilled daily. The only pool on the National Register.

Tip A 1924 swimming hole carved out of a coral-rock quarry — 820,000 gallons of springwater refilled daily, palm-grottoes, Venetian bridges, a fake lighthouse. The only pool on the National Register of Historic Places. Get there by 11 AM open (capacity caps fast on summer weekends). Drive Coral Way's banyan tunnel west for the date-prelude. Pair with the Biltmore Hotel (1925) two blocks south for cocktails on the colonnade — the largest hotel pool in the US is hidden inside, Esther Williams shot films here. Coral Gables is what Miami planned to be in 1920.

An 1825 lighthouse on a 1-mile beach with no high-rises. Stiltsville on the horizon. The wildest end of Miami you can drive to.

Tip Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park at the southern tip of Key Biscayne — the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County (1825 lighthouse) on a 1-mile beach with NO high-rises, just sea grape and pelicans. Climb the 109 lighthouse steps for the view to Stiltsville (the seven stilt-houses standing in the bay since the 1930s). Boater's Grill or the Lighthouse Café for fresh hogfish and conch fritters. Crandon Beach (north end of the island) for the family scene with the Atlantic at its calmest blue. The Rickenbacker Causeway drive itself is the date prelude — Biscayne Bay on both sides for 4 miles.

Calle Ocho, dominoes in the park, café con leche at Versailles since 1971, salsa at Ball & Chain. The most-itself part of Miami.

Tip Calle Ocho (SW 8th St) between 12th and 17th Avenue is the spine. Versailles (3555 SW 8th) for the politicians-and-grandmas Cuban diner — café con leche at the ventanita window since 1971, no menu needed, order the medianoche. Domino Park (Máximo Gómez Park) — 50+ men playing dominoes under the trees since the 1980s, you can sit and watch for free. Ball & Chain (1513 SW 8th) for live salsa and mojitos most nights. Azucar Ice Cream for the abuela-Maria flavor (sweet cream, vanilla wafers, guava). The most-itself part of Miami.

Above 63rd, the buildings drop, the locals appear. Normandy Isle's French-Argentine grid, MiMo hotels, the beach nobody photographs.

Tip Above 63rd Street, the crowds thin, the buildings drop to four stories, and you find the version of Miami Beach the locals actually use. Normandy Isle (71st-79th, an island built in the 1920s) has a French/Argentine grid — the Saturday Normandy Farmers Market 9 AM – 2 PM. Cafe Crema on 71st for the Argentine breakfast. The MiMo (Miami Modernist) hotels along Collins — Deauville, Casablanca — are crumbling-romantic. Walk the beach from 73rd to 87th (Surfside) with almost nobody on it. Bal Harbour Shops at the north end for the splurge moment (or skip).

Pastel Deco lit in neon, classic cars cruising Wed and Sat, the Versace steps at 1116. Peak between 9 and 11 PM.

Tip The single most-Miami stretch of pavement. Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th — pastel Deco hotels lit in neon, classic-car cruise nights (Wed and Sat 7 PM, the Lambos and old Cadillacs both show), street performers, restaurant touts who will absolutely heckle you to look at their menu. The Versace Mansion (Casa Casuarina, 1116 Ocean) — Gianni was shot on these steps July 15 1997, the building is now a private restaurant ($55 brunch on weekends). Lummus Park across the street for the beach side. Go between 9 and 11 PM — pre-club energy peaks, dinner crowds clear. After midnight gets rowdy.

Frost Science Museum is 100 ft south — combine for a half-day Museum Park hit ($30 Frost — planetarium + 3-story aquarium + raptor garden). 17 acres at the southern tip, cruise ships sliding out at sunset, the rebuilt pier 450 ft into the Atlantic. Sunset, free, easy.

Tip The southern tip of Miami Beach, where the cruise ships exit Government Cut into the Atlantic. The 17-acre park has the South Pointe Pier (rebuilt 2018, 450 ft into the ocean), grass for picnicking, a splash pad for kids, and direct views of the cruise terminal traffic — the Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC ships sliding out at sunset are weirdly hypnotic. Joe's Stone Crab is two blocks west. Smith & Wollensky steakhouse on the cut with the same ship view ($$$$). The hidden ★ South Pointe Pier at 5 AM is here — see if you've unlocked it.

A 1959 roadside fruit stand 50 min south. Mamey shakes, black sapote, pet emus. Robert himself, 73, still works the till.

Tip A roadside fruit stand turned cult pilgrimage 50 min south of Miami, en route to the Keys or the Everglades. Robert Moehling started selling cucumbers here when he was 6 in 1959 — he is now 73 and still works the stand. Mamey, mamoncillo, atemoya, black sapote, key lime, monstera fruit, durian when in season. The milkshakes are the move ($8 — mamey + key lime is the signature). Pet the goats and emus out back. Pair with a 20-min push further south to the Everglades National Park entrance at Ernest Coe Visitor Center, or 30 min east to Biscayne National Park headquarters. Or just turn around and drive back full of fruit.

750 acres, cageless, the only tropical zoo on the continental US. 10 AM open before the heat. Quad-bike rental if anyone's under 12.

Tip The largest zoo in Florida and the only tropical zoo in the continental US — 750 acres, cageless habitats, the climate works for the residents. Get there at 10 AM open before the heat (Miami summer is unforgiving here — fewer trees than the Northeast zoos). The Asian elephants, the Komodo dragon, the giant otters in clear-walled enclosures. The Sky Safari monorail ($5 extra) is the move if a kid is tired by noon. Rent a quad-bike at the entrance ($35/hr, 4 people) — the zoo is huge, kids on foot will fade fast. Pair with a Robert Is Here stop on the way back (30 min further south, see X).
