The bay cruise is the date. 90 minutes past Star Island mansions and the downtown skyline rising out of Biscayne Bay.

Tip Open-air waterfront mall on Biscayne Bay — yes, it's touristy, but the Island Queen 90-minute bay cruise ($38, departs hourly 11 AM – 7 PM) is the legit way to see Star Island's mansions, the cruise port, and the downtown skyline from the water. Live Latin music on the bayfront stage most evenings. Free Metromover ride here from anywhere downtown. Bayfront Park next door for the Friendship Torch and the InterContinental's giant Henry Moore sculpture. Stop by, eat fast, board a boat.

A 1924 coral-quarry swimming hole. Venetian bridges, palm grottoes, springwater refilled daily. The only pool on the National Register.

Tip A 1924 swimming hole carved out of a coral-rock quarry — 820,000 gallons of springwater refilled daily, palm-grottoes, Venetian bridges, a fake lighthouse. The only pool on the National Register of Historic Places. Get there by 11 AM open (capacity caps fast on summer weekends). Drive Coral Way's banyan tunnel west for the date-prelude. Pair with the Biltmore Hotel (1925) two blocks south for cocktails on the colonnade — the largest hotel pool in the US is hidden inside, Esther Williams shot films here. Coral Gables is what Miami planned to be in 1920.

Home of the Dolphins, 18 mi north of the date-shape — drop, kiss, drive south to Aventura or Wynwood.

Tip Hard Rock is 18 mi north of South Beach, in unincorporated Miami Gardens — a residential suburb that goes off ONLY when something is in the building. There is no date-shape on Don Shula Drive itself. The move: drop the partner at the dedicated rideshare zone (off NW 199th, 90 min before kickoff to clear security), then drive 10 min south to Aventura Mall (the biggest mall in Florida, third-biggest in the US — Apple, Zara Home, Treats Truck) for a 4-hour kill. Or 25 min south to Wynwood (see Q + W below). Plan rideshare surge — event-day prices triple.

90 min south on the Overseas Highway. Feed the tarpon at Robbie's, hogfish at Lazy Days, sunset at Lorelei. The Keys at their easiest.

Tip The Upper Keys, 90 min south of Miami on US-1 (the Overseas Highway — one of the great American drives). Robbie's Marina (mile marker 77.5) for feeding 4-ft tarpon by hand off the dock ($2.25 a bucket of bait, $1 dock fee, the line is part of it). Lorelei Restaurant for sunset on the Bay side (live music, every night). Theater of the Sea ($45) for the only swim-with-dolphin experience in the Keys. The Lazy Days Restaurant for hogfish. Half-day is doable; full day is the right play. Skip the Keys if you're going further than Key Largo — Islamorada is the right call.

$15 outfield seats, retractable roof, the Bobblehead Museum behind home plate, Versailles 5 min east. Miami's sports-day alt.

Tip Retractable-roof Marlins ballpark on the site of the old Orange Bowl, surrounded by Little Havana — pregame at Cubaocho Museum + Performing Arts (1465 SW 8th) for mojitos in front of pre-Castro Cuban paintings, then walk 10 min south to the game. $15 outfield seats are the move — the Marlins almost never sell out (1.2M attendance, MLB's lowest), so single-game tickets on Stubhub day-of for $10–$20 is standard. Bobblehead Museum behind home plate (700 of them, free). Quirkiest park in MLB. Not adjacent to Hard Rock but the sports-day alternative for a Marlins game.

Split a 2hr private with another couple for $200pp. Past Star Island, Fisher Island, the downtown skyline at sunset. The Miami splurge.

Tip You can rent a private yacht in Miami without owning a fortune — group charters via Boatsetter or GetMyBoat run $300–$500 for 2 hours with a captain, split between 2–6 people. Sunset cruises (2 hours, 5:30 PM departure) past Star Island (where the celebs live: Diddy, Shaq, Gloria Estefan), Fisher Island (the most expensive ZIP code in the US), and the downtown skyline. Bring your own bottle (most include a cooler with ice). The cheaper alternative: the Island Queen 90-min bay cruise from Bayside ($38 — see B). If you're going to splurge ONCE in Miami, this is the splurge.

750 acres, cageless, the only tropical zoo on the continental US. 10 AM open before the heat. Quad-bike rental if anyone's under 12.

Tip The largest zoo in Florida and the only tropical zoo in the continental US — 750 acres, cageless habitats, the climate works for the residents. Get there at 10 AM open before the heat (Miami summer is unforgiving here — fewer trees than the Northeast zoos). The Asian elephants, the Komodo dragon, the giant otters in clear-walled enclosures. The Sky Safari monorail ($5 extra) is the move if a kid is tired by noon. Rent a quad-bike at the entrance ($35/hr, 4 people) — the zoo is huge, kids on foot will fade fast. Pair with a Robert Is Here stop on the way back (30 min further south, see X).
