Tip Time the climb down for low tide so the sand strip is wide and the tide pools open up. Grab a cliff-edge table at one of the stacked warungs for sunset and a cold Bintang — the surfers below become the show. The stairs are no joke; wear grippy sandals and don't carry more than you need.

Tip Walk it just after sunrise — the grass ridge glows and you'll have the spine of the hill almost to yourselves before the heat and crowds arrive. It's an easy 2km out-and-back; reward yourselves with coffee at Karsa Kafe at the top end. Bring water and a hat — there's almost no shade on the open ridge.

Tip Come at low tide — high tide swallows most of the sand and the swim-throughs to the cave. The long staircase keeps the crowds thin, so it stays feeling like a secret. Bring everything you need (water, snacks); there's only a tiny warung up top and nothing at the bottom.

Tip Arrive by 5:15pm to get cliff-edge amphitheatre seats with the sea behind the chanting circle — the sunset and the trance dance happen together. Wear a sarong (provided) and keep sunglasses and loose snacks zipped away; the temple monkeys are bold and quick. Pair it with dinner nearby afterward to stretch the evening.

Stepping into the cold spring fountains together turns a sightseeing stop into something quietly intimate.
Tip Go right at opening to beat the tour buses and have the petirtaan (bathing pools) nearly to yourselves. To enter the water you must wear a proper sarong and follow the fountains in order, left to right — rent a sealed locker for phones and wallets. Bring a dry change of clothes; the spring water is genuinely cold.

Tip Buy Kecak tickets at the gate by 5pm — the amphitheatre fills fast and the upper sea-facing rows sell out first. Hold tight to sunglasses, hats and snacks: the resident monkeys are practised thieves and will snatch anything loose. The 60-minute Ramayana fire performance ends just as the sun drops, so you get temple, dance and sunset in one sitting.

Shoulder to shoulder over crackling and rice across from the palace — the most Balinese lunch you'll share.
Tip Come for an early lunch — the famous spit-roasted suckling pig genuinely sells out by mid-afternoon and the queue forms by noon. Order the 'special' plate (with crackling, sausage and the works) and split it with rice; one plate is plenty as a tasting for two. It's pork-only and very local, so it's a fun this-is-the-real-Bali date stop, not a romantic dinner.
