Tip Book a front-section daybed days ahead for golden hour — the infinity pool meets the sea right at the sunset line. Skip the buffet hype and order off the à la carte instead; the cocktails are the real reason to be here. Come for sunset, leave before the late-night DJ crowd swallows the place.

Pecatu, Uluwatu
A staircase down a cliff into Bali's most romantically scruffy cove.
Tip Time the climb down for low tide so the sand strip is wide and the tide pools open up. Grab a cliff-edge table at one of the stacked warungs for sunset and a cold Bintang — the surfers below become the show. The stairs are no joke; wear grippy sandals and don't carry more than you need.

Tip Walk it just after sunrise — the grass ridge glows and you'll have the spine of the hill almost to yourselves before the heat and crowds arrive. It's an easy 2km out-and-back; reward yourselves with coffee at Karsa Kafe at the top end. Bring water and a hat — there's almost no shade on the open ridge.

Tip Come at low tide — high tide swallows most of the sand and the swim-throughs to the cave. The long staircase keeps the crowds thin, so it stays feeling like a secret. Bring everything you need (water, snacks); there's only a tiny warung up top and nothing at the bottom.

Tip Arrive by 8am: the light is soft, the famous Bali swings have no queue, and the tour crowds haven't landed yet. Carry small cash — the local farmers tending each section of terrace ask a few thousand rupiah 'donation' to pass through their gates. Wear grippy shoes; the path down into the valley is steep, slick clay after any rain.
