Tip A Swedish-run corner bar on Leith Walk that nails the cosy-but-not-twee balance — board games, candlelight, and a genuinely friendly crowd. Grab the window seat, order the meatballs and a couple of aquavits, and settle in. Their seasonal events (crayfish parties, Christmas glögg) are worth timing a date around.

Seventy acres of green with the whole skyline floating across the pond — the gentlest grand view in the city.
Tip Seventy acres of free botanic garden with the city skyline framed across the pond from the Rock Garden — the paid Victorian Glasshouses are worth it on a cold day. Bring a coffee from the Stockbridge gate side and loop via the Chinese Hillside. The view from the lawn back toward the castle and Arthur's Seat is the sleeper photo of the city.

Tip An achingly pretty independent café famous for towering, inventive cakes displayed in a vintage wardrobe — share the seasonal sponge and a pour-over. Bag the window-bar seat looking onto West Port for prime people-watching. It's tiny and beloved, so off-peak weekday afternoons are the calm window.

Tip Ask for the Secret Garden room rather than the darker original Witchery — it's lighter and just as opulent. The two-course theatre/pre-show menu is the value play if you're not splurging. Book weeks ahead; this is Edinburgh's go-to proposal restaurant for a reason.
