Tip Three floors of the kind of bookshop you can lose an hour in — set a gentle challenge: each pick a book for the other in ten minutes. The Scottish-writing section upstairs is unusually deep, and there's a café for the debrief. It's a stone's throw from the University, so it hums with student energy.

A secret hamlet of red-roofed cottages on a green river, swallowed whole by the modern city around it.
Tip A pocket of tile-roofed millers' cottages on the Water of Leith that feels centuries from the city it's minutes from — go early before the photographers arrive. Pick up the Water of Leith Walkway here and follow it toward Stockbridge past St Bernard's Well. The hump-backed view from Dean Bridge above is the postcard, but the riverbank below is the date.

Castlehill, Royal Mile
A fortress on a 700-million-year-old plug of volcanic rock, with a gun that still startles the gulls at one.
Tip Book a timed slot online to skip the queue and aim for the One O'Clock Gun at 1pm — it still makes everyone jump. The views from the Argyle Battery over the New Town are the best free-with-ticket vista in the city. Do the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret's Chapel (the oldest building in Edinburgh) before the crowds thicken.

Tip The city outpost of the much-loved Leith original, doing impeccable Scottish shellfish without the harbour trek — the seafood platter is the move for two. Sit at the marble counter if the tables are full; it's livelier and you can watch the kitchen. Book ahead on weekends, Festival season especially.

Tip The Scottish National Gallery's free collection — Titian, Monet, Raeburn's skating minister — is an unhurried, rain-proof date with real talking points. Make for the Scottish rooms downstairs, then the café-restaurant with its garden view toward the Old Town; Thursday late opening is the quiet, romantic time to go. (If you specifically want contemporary art, the Ingleby Gallery is a separate spot at 33 Barony St off Broughton St — not on the Mound.)

Tip Come hungry on a Sunday and graze your way along the Water of Leith — paella, gozleme, fresh oysters and artisan cheese in one loop. Afterwards wander the independent shops on St Stephen Street and Raeburn Place. The market shrinks in deep winter, so summer and autumn Sundays are the lively ones.

Tip Ask for the Secret Garden room rather than the darker original Witchery — it's lighter and just as opulent. The two-course theatre/pre-show menu is the value play if you're not splurging. Book weeks ahead; this is Edinburgh's go-to proposal restaurant for a reason.

Tip Splash a little on the Grand Circle for the best acoustics and the sweep of the domed ceiling overhead. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and touring acts both play here, and Fringe brings big-name gigs. Pair it with a pre-show drink across the road on Lothian Road before the lights go down.

A breezy harbour-side bolthole where the tram and the sea both end.
Tip We couldn't find a 'Yardarm' here — the Newhaven Harbour seafood spot is The Fishmarket at 23A Pier Place (Pier House is the other). Sit by the window for views across to the old lighthouse, order the fish, and time it for sunset over the Firth of Forth. The tram now ends right here, so it's an easy car-free afternoon.
