The Fountain of Rings (the world's largest fountain incorporating the Olympic rings) shoots on a schedule four times a day — the 9 PM show in summer is the date. Bricks throughout the park bear donor names from the original Olympic fundraising. Surrounded by the Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, College Football Hall of Fame, and CFNN Center — the densest tourist quarter in the South. ★WC match-day-base.

Atlanta's most walkable suburb. Brick Store Pub since 1997, Eddie's Attic since 1992, a real town square 15 minutes by MARTA.

Tip Atlanta's most-walkable suburb — a real town square with a courthouse, a bookstore, a brewery, and 30+ independent restaurants within 4 blocks. The Square hosts the Decatur Book Festival every Labor Day weekend (the largest indie book festival in the country). Brick Store Pub for 350+ beers in a 1925 building. Leon's Full Service for cocktails in a converted gas station. Eddie's Attic for live music since 1992 — Indigo Girls and John Mayer played here pre-fame. Take MARTA in.

Flat Shoals Avenue's six-block strip. The Earl since 1999, Argosy for Belgian beer, the version of Atlanta that hasn't been polished.

Tip EAV is the version of Atlanta that hasn't been polished. Flat Shoals Avenue is the spine — The Earl (live music + burgers since 1999, REM and Drive-By Truckers played here), Argosy for craft beer in a Belgian-inspired room, Joe's East Atlanta Coffee for the morning. The East Atlanta Strut every September is the neighborhood block party. Banshee for new-Southern dinner is the dressed-up move. The whole strip is a 6-block walk — park once, drink twice.

A 1929 Moorish-Egyptian movie palace. Painted desert sky on the ceiling, drifting projected clouds. Saved from demolition in 1974.

Tip A 1929 Moorish-Egyptian movie palace saved from the wrecking ball in 1974 by a public campaign that became a Southern preservation legend. The interior is staggering — minaret-topped balconies, a Czech crystal chandelier, a ceiling painted with a desert sky and projected drifting clouds. Hosts touring Broadway, comedy, and concerts year-round. The Mighty Mo Wurlitzer organ rises from the orchestra pit before classic film screenings. Tour the building during the day ($20, Saturdays 10/11 AM) if you don't have show tickets.

Manuel's Tavern since 1956 (every GA governor since Carter has held court), ASW whiskey, the weeknight-regulars side of Highland.

Tip The stretch of North Highland between Freedom Parkway and Virginia Ave — the bar strip distinct from V (Virginia-Highland proper). ASW Distillery on Armour Drive (3 min east) for craft Georgia whiskey tastings. Hand In Hand for craft cocktails in a converted bungalow. Highland Bakery for the morning after. Manuel's Tavern (since 1956) is the political-pilgrimage bar where every Georgia governor since Carter has held court. Bigger crowd than V, less brunch-y energy, more weeknight regulars.

30th floor of the Hilton since 1976. A vodka cart wheeled tableside, beef stroganoff, the full Atlanta sunset through the west window.

Tip Atlanta's longest-running fine-dining destination — opened 1976 on the 30th floor of the Atlanta Hilton with 360° city views. The Czarist-Russian theme is a curiosity — vodka flights from a chilled cart wheeled tableside (since opening), borscht with sour cream, beef stroganoff. The room is dark wood, white tablecloths, and a wall of windows facing west toward the airport sunset. Recently revitalized by the Hilton group — the menu modernized, the vodka cart preserved. Reservations on OpenTable, dressed up. The view alone is the date.

The 1926 Sears warehouse, now Atlanta's flagship food hall. Skyline Park on the roof with a 1940s Ferris wheel and the stadium dome on the skyline.

Tip The 1926 Sears, Roebuck warehouse — once the largest brick building in the Southeast — converted in 2014 into Atlanta's flagship food hall + retail + offices + apartments. Hop's Chicken, Bellina Alimentari, Marrakesh, H&F Burger, Botiwalla. The Skyline Park up on the roof is the secret — a 1940s-style boardwalk with a Heyday Ferris wheel ($5), Skyline Skee-ball, and a 360° Atlanta view that includes the Mercedes-Benz stadium dome to the southwest. Sunset at 8:30 PM in summer with cocktails at 9 Mile Station rooftop is the move. The Eastside Trail BeltLine entry connects right outside.

Atlanta's historic gayborhood spine. Outwrite Bookstore since 1993, Blake's since 1986, the AIDS memorial in Piedmont two blocks west.

Tip The 10th & Piedmont intersection is the historic heart of LGBTQ+ Atlanta — bars, bookstores, and the AIDS memorial in Piedmont Park 2 blocks west. Outwrite Bookstore + Coffeehouse (since 1993, reopened 2019 at 991 Piedmont) is the daytime anchor — queer-owned, queer-staffed, the South's best LGBTQ+ book selection. Blake's on the Park has been the cornerstone Sunday afternoon scene since 1986. Atlanta Pride is the weekend after Columbus Day in October — the South's largest pride event, kickoff is in Piedmont Park. The 10th Street strip is Atlanta's most-walkable nightlife in the gayborhood.

Atlanta's 1860s street level, paved over in 1928, rediscovered in 1969. Gaslit cobblestone alleys under brick arches. Walking to Mercedes-Benz. ★WC.

Tip ★WC — 0.8 miles walking from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta's original 1860s street level — when the rail bridges were built over Alabama Street in 1928, the old streetscape was paved over and forgotten until rediscovered in 1969. The 12-acre subterranean district reopened multiple times — most recently with new bars, music venues, and food courts under brick arches that pre-date the Civil War. The 1860s gaslit cobblestone alleys are the photo. The neighborhood is rougher around the edges than the King Center area but the historic value is real. Five Points MARTA is right above — every line in Atlanta meets here.

Bacchanalia since 1993, Sid Mashburn flagship, Cooks & Soldiers tapas. Atlanta's design-magazine moment in a Howell Mill warehouse district.

Tip Atlanta's design-magazine moment. A converted 1900s warehouse district on Howell Mill Road — boutiques (Sid Mashburn for menswear, Ann Mashburn for women's, Billy Reid), Bacchanalia (since 1993, the fine-dining benchmark of the South, prix fixe $115), Cooks & Soldiers (Basque tapas with a wood-fire oven), Marcel for old-school steakhouse with a marble bar. Star Provisions food shop attached to Bacchanalia for cheese + bread + coffee during the day. The Westside is the neighborhood that proved Atlanta could do dense, walkable, designed.
